Unifying a digital strategy across a complex, international enterprise to deliver on a 2030 ambition
To deliver on its 2030 vision, Alfa Laval, a global industrial manufacturing leader with a strong track record in engineering and in pioneering new standards, has set a bold growth agenda to grow revenue significantly through organic expansion.
With more than 10 autonomous business units, each with its own P&L and a high degree of local accountability, the company is characterised by a decentralised operating model. Recognising that digitalisation is a key strategic lever to accelerate growth, improve customer engagement, and enhance operational efficiency, the leadership team identified a critical gap: the absence of an enterprise-wide digital strategy that could translate the business ambition into targeted digitalisation efforts and investments.
Group Digital, responsible for leading digital enablement across Alfa Laval, therefore saw the need for a shared vision and unified direction that could guide action and collaboration with business areas. To move forward, the company partnered with Implement Consulting Group to define a business-centric digital ambition that bridges digital with the business landscape, is anchored on clear strategic choices, and outlines the role of digitalisation in contributing to the 2030 growth journey.
The approach and impact
To ensure a truly business-focused digital strategy, the project began by gathering insights across the organisation. Subsequently, stakeholders across business divisions were interviewed, strategies from all business areas were analysed, and outside-in perspectives from industry SMEs were brought in to further understand challenges and opportunities. This insight-driven approach provided a rich understanding of digital needs, capabilities, and expectations across the business units, and formed the scope for the strategy.
Through impactful workshops with a high level of co-creation with Group Digital, a tailored digital strategy anchored in Alfa Laval’s 2030 vision and strategic pillars was designed.

The strategy clearly articulated the role of digitalisation in enabling sustainable growth, operational excellence, and driving enterprise unity, and was underlined by a number of prioritised must-win battles, reflecting areas where digitalisation will create measurable business impact.
Importantly, the process prepared the Group Digital leadership team to take full ownership. Equipped with a clear narrative, structured storyline, and strategic framework, they were empowered to engage with business stakeholders to further cascade the ambition and accelerate alignment on cross-functional priorities, ultimately delivering a digital ambition that is rooted in the company’s overall direction and ready to be taken forward into joint planning and execution.
