Generative AI holds the potential to help the Belgian public administrations meet rising service demands by improving efficiency, enhancing service delivery, and allowing employees to focus on higher-value tasks.

An Implement Consulting Group study commissioned by Google explores how generative AI can enhance productivity and create value for citizens and businesses in the public administration of Belgium. The potential in this part of the public sector is sizeable and particularly well-suited for early AI benefits at low risk.

Key findings of the study:

  • Public administration in Belgium can unlock an EUR 4 billion opportunity solely by adopting generative AI for administrative processes.
  • 71 % of Belgian public administration jobs have potential to be complemented by generative AI.
  • Cross-cutting tasks form the foundation of most public administration jobs, with the top five tasks accounting for 75 % of generative AI’s potential in Belgium.
  • Low-risk use cases account for 20 % of the potential in public administration and should be realised first.

Early AI adoption by the Belgian government can accelerate uptake across the wider economy by setting a strong example within existing regulations. By equipping civil servants with the right AI skills, establishing clear governance frameworks, and ensuring access to scalable infrastructure and specialised applications, Belgium can unlock the full potential of AI to enhance public services.
