How shipowners can drive sustainable transformation
6 March 2025
The global shipping industry faces immense challenges in transitioning to net zero. Significant financial investment is required, but the financial landscape remains fragmented and complex, creating substantial barriers for shipowners to access the funding necessary to adopt zero-emission technologies and improve energy efficiency.
As part of the Zero-Emission Shipping Mission, Implement Consulting Group and the Danish Maritime Authority have conducted a study titled ‘Mapping global financial support opportunities for zero-emission and energy-efficient ships’. The study provides a global overview of more than 70 financial support and guarantee schemes for investments in newbuilds, retrofitting, and energy efficiency upgrades.
Key takeaways for shipowners include:
- Monitor emerging pilot programmes, as they could become game-changers in maritime financing
- Leverage global initiatives that provide grants and concessional loans to support energy-efficient retrofits and clean fuel adoption
- Approach private equity opportunities with clear environmental metrics and a strong business case
- Combine grants, concessional loans, and leasing mechanisms to reduce upfront costs and financial risks
- Invest in understanding and preparing for eligibility requirements
- Partner with technology providers, governments, or larger operators
By offering a global perspective and highlighting specific opportunities, the study seeks to bridge the gap between ambition and action, enabling shipowners of all sizes and governments to contribute to the shipping industry’s sustainable transformation.
