Nordic Dealer Executive Outlook 2030

Navigating the squeeze on the automotive frontline
Published

12 October 2026

The dealer is not disappearing. But the economics that made the traditional dealership work are being dismantled.

That is the message from senior executives at leading dealer and importer groups across Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland. New-car margins are under pressure. Conventional workshop income declines as the electric share of the car parc grows. Residual values now decide affordability. And customers arrive at the dealership having done most of the work at home.

Yet the same executives are clear that customers still need them: for reassurance, a test drive, an explanation of the technology, and someone to call when something goes wrong.

The question is not whether dealers survive. It is whether dealers and OEMs can rebuild the model while they still have the capacity to invest.

What the report covers

  • The product has changed. BEVs and software reset what dealers sell, support, and earn from. Software adds work and skills before it adds revenue.

  • The two-sided squeeze. Both new-car sales and aftersales remain essential, and neither can carry the model alone. No new profit pool has yet replaced traditional workshop income.

  • From information centre to confidence centre. Digital discovery makes physical interaction more important, not less. It also changes what the footprint is for. As one executive put it: "We need to be more like IKEA."

  • Resetting the dealer–OEM relationship. Executives describe pressure, risk, and investment demands flowing one way. They set out seven requirements for a partnership that works.

  • A transformation agenda. Running the core exceptionally well is the precondition. Transformation capacity is itself a capability many groups do not yet have.

About the research

The report draws on in-depth interviews conducted in 2026 with senior executives from leading dealer and importer groups in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland.

Findings are directional executive perspectives, not statistically representative results. Quotations are anonymised.
