A leading Nordic telecom company was undergoing a large data-dependent transformation in order to become more innovative and customer oriented. A data governance programme was launched to elevate the customer experience, ensure regulatory compliance and improve business performance. At the same time, an initiative to change the operating model was launched.
With a focus on business impact, e.g. before, during and after implementation, a top-down approach was taken for the foundation of the programme, including data ownership and agreement in decision forums. A more operational approach was introduced by rapidly building virtual end-to-end teams to balance and complement the top-down mindset. A common understanding of cause and effect was established through these teams, and they were able to identify ways of prioritising and addressing issues.
